Those attending the York Festival of Ideas will easily find inspiration at one of York’s oldest inns, built on the spot where Guy Fawkes was born in 1570. All low ceilings, dark walls and candle wax artfully dripped down bottles, the restaurant at the back makes a lovely hideaway from York’s tourist-trampled streets. There are also rooms, but we were there to enjoy the brie and fennel risotto – quirkily served in a breadcrumb wedge – the superbly nutty brownie and a frankly gargantuan cheeseboard.
