The Star Tavern

In the early hours of 8 August 1963, 17 men stopped a Royal Mail train near Mentmore in Buckinghamshire and got away with £2.6m. Emerald Street may not have been born when the Great Train Robbery happened but we have drunk in the pub where Ronnie Biggs and co hatched their heist. The Star Tavern is a charming little inn tucked between Sloane Street and Hyde Park. Pleasingly, there are no annoying TV screens, so you can concentrate on soaking up history while enjoying a glass of shiraz.
