Five of the best make-up fixers: put down the hairspray

A good makeup fixer is probably the one thing missing from your face arsenal. Here’s five to fill the void

Urban Decay’s All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray

Long haul

This is the one to keep your slick sticking right through an evening out. Urban Decay’s All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray (£22, John Lewis) uses temperature control tech in its microfine mist (*fancy*) so it doesn’t feel heavy but does stop cracks setting in, even when you’re somewhere warm or humid, like an overpriced city bar.

NARS’ Light Reflecting Setting Powder

Optical illusion

Don’t panic! NARS’ Light Reflecting Setting Powder (£27, Space NK) is ostensibly a very bright white, but on an actual human face it’s translucent. Phew. It uses a Light Reflecting Complex which – in simplified science – means it keeps shine at bay but sends light in the right directions and makes lines and pores look smaller.

NYX’s Makeup Setting Spray

Desk worthy

There is a bottle of NYX’s Makeup Setting Spray (£7, ASOS) sitting on editor Anna’s desk, which she spritzes on if she’s going somewhere nice after work. Hers is the mattifying version – lightweight, avoids face shine – but you can also get it in a dewy finish. We like the idea of owning both and alternating.

MAC Prep and Prime Transparent Finishing Powder

Get set

MAC powders are ace at helping build up coverage slowly and subtly (get your shade checked in store). But their Prep and Prime Transparent Finishing Powder (£21, MAC) is for when you want a dewier look and know it’ll stay in place. Its USP is that it controls shine without drying, so it’s good for combination skin.

Pixi’s Makeup Fixing Mist

This is fancy. Pixi’s Makeup Fixing Mist (£16, Cult Beauty) is obviously designed to stop foundation and eyeshadow ending up halfway down your face, but it’s got rose water and green tea in its formula to boost moisture levels in your skin AND keep you cool. It can be used under makeup, too. Puts the rest of your kit to shame, really.
