• It’s trashy and it’s cool. Following three young women as they navigate the highs and lows of show business, love and female friendship.
• But it’s also completely insane. Drugs! Abortions! Manipulative actresses! Fur coats! English men called Lyon (why?)! More drugs! VOTD is a page-turner alright.
• You will never make a decision as bad as the ones in this book. Anne, Jennifer and Neely are a bundle of bad choices made into women. Anne seems especially bad as she’s more clueless than the other two.
• The sleep cure. All Dolls aficionados fantasise about the sleep cure. Jennifer is sent to a Swiss clinic and knocked out for ten days in order to get over an emotional trauma and shed some weight. Sounds dubious, but tempting.
• The gossip. Author Jacqueline Susann spent a lot of time in Hollywood. The internet abounds with theories about which characters are based on which stars.
