It was Margaret Maughan, 83, who lit the flame at last week’s Paralympic opening ceremony. In 1958 she was paralysed from the waist down in a road accident. She was treated at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where the Paralympic Games concept was developed. Margaret took up archery and at the first official Games in 1960 in Rome she won Britain’s first Paralympic gold.
