Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down: why we’ll be watching

The good people behind Netflix must be exhausted

The good people behind Netflix must be exhausted. At the moment they’re unstoppable in creating original TV, releasing something new what seems like every week. But what’s really caught our eye is musical drama The Get Down from director Baz Luhrmann, available from today. Set in New York’s nearly-bankrupt Bronx district at the end of the 70s, when disco was on its way out and hip hop was about to go big, the focus is on the teens attempting to ride that wave (aside from one name you’ll recognise – Jaden Smith – the lead cast are a group of relative newcomers). The production creds are enough to get us pressing play: rapper Nas has executive produced, Grandmaster Flash is associate producer and of course, Luhrmann’s trademark splendour will be over the whole thing.
