If you’re suffering a blinding hangover or about to give yourself one – we have some advice.

Before you drink

A 2015 study by Australia’s national science agency and Horticulture Innovation found drinking 220ml of Korean pear juice (90p; Starry Mart) before drinking alcohol can help lessen the effects of hangovers. The fruit contains essential enzymes, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), which speed up alcohol metabolism and inhibit alcohol absorption.

Before you go sleep

A remedy as old as the hills and for good reason. The herbal supplement milk thistle helps protect the liver from toxins. Take it from team Emerald Street: the tincture is more effective than the tablets (hey! We have to go out a lot for our Cocktails & Cappuccinos section!). Drink 50ml of A Vogel milk thistle (£16.20) in a glass of water before you go to bed; sip the same amount again throughout the next day.

The morning after
Natasha Corrett’s Hangover Cure No 1 juice is a tried and tested (by us) recipe that contains ginger, tomatoes, lime, coconut water and parsley to help reduce nausea, hydrate and rebalance the sodium and potassium levels in your body that take a battering after boozing. While you’re suffering
We know you want to eat a burrito for breakfast, followed by a chocolate muffin and a large cappuccino but it’s not what your body needs when it’s been walloped by the free bar. Instead, eat eggs, which contain protein that breaks down into amino acids, a compound depleted by alcohol and essential for detoxifying your liver. The fructose in fruit and 100% fruit juice will give you energy and help your body to rid itself of the bad stuff. Bananas are particularly helpful because they are high in potassium, an essential mineral and electrolyte that is depleted by boozing.
