Remember a legend
Celebrating the stunning legacy of Sonia Rykiel
Last week, Sonia Rykiel passed away from the effects of Parkinson’s disease, aged 86. Her legacy is in the impact she made on clothes and culture: her designs helped female dressing embrace freer movement with iconic, relaxed fits. Her Poor Boy Sweater reinvigorated knitwear. She inspired the main character in Robert Altman’s Pret-a-Porter (and cameos in it, too) and collaborated on a Malcolm McLaren song. This YouTube clip is a snapshot of preparations to day before the fashion house’s 40th anniversary show; a touching moment behind the scenes of how one of fashion’s most influential women worked.
