Not all makeup is created equal. Here are some of the finest cruelty-free products around

So much shade

A tube of Kat Von D’s everlasting liquid lipstick will last you for aeons, because once you’ve applied it, it Will. Not. Budge. While many matte lipsticks can make your lips feel like they’ve been chalked up for some gymnastics, this one feels almost invisible. They come in all sorts of bold and beautiful colours (aquamarine, anyone?) but the classic reds are a fail-safe. £17, Debenhams

e.l.f. on the shelf

It’s unusual for a beauty brand to focus their efforts on the deeper, richer end of the spectrum when it comes to lip colours, but that’s exactly what e.l.f. Cosmetics have done. Of their nine velvet mattes, most are dark and handsome – burgundy, berry, Bordeaux, and brown all feature. If you apply this with a lip brush it can last just as long as its significantly pricier sisters. £4.50, e.l.f. Cosmetics

No chapped chops

Arbonne’s lippies are so moisturising it’s like jamming your mouth straight into a jar of coconut oil. Mmmmm. You want a bright coral, or a feminine fuschia, or a deep mauve? They’ve got them all. There’s been no sacrifice in colour payoff to make these lipsticks completely vegan and cruelty-free – they really pack a punch. If your lips are chapped beyond belief, the Intelligence lip treatment works miracles. £23, Arbonne

Swipe right

Are you the kind of person who’d like to wear a bold lip to work, but always end up scraping it off and desperately reaching for industrial-strength lip balm instead? Tarte’s colour splash hydrating lipsticks are for you. They’re made with soothing ingredients like algae extract and shea butter, and the number of nude shades is truly impressive. £20, Tarte

Multi-tasker

It’s not just bath bombs in Lush, you know. The pink and red shades of their vegan lipsticks are waxy enough to blend into cheeks if the rain’s stripped your blusher off, but Dare, a deep purple, is what we want to wear all winter. The colour is tough, but the ingredients are definitely not. Featuring castor oil and orange peel wax, it’s a buildable, long-wearing lippie. £13.50, Lush
