Play nicely

Proving that cocktail sausages are absolutely not fundamental to a party, Nicely Kitchen are throwing an all-vegan Christmas do tomorrow evening. There’ll be food from a range of vendors – including Nicely Kitchen themselves, obviously – as well as the chance to pick up some candle/jewellery/plant pot-shaped treats from local makers. 8 Dec; 5pm–11pm; £2; Altrincham FC, J. Davidson Stadium, WA15

Is that... Thing?

Your eyes do not deceive you – there is indeed a collection of unfamiliar objects hiding between the tomes at Chetham’s Library. The installation by Brass Art takes inspiration from the building’s scientific roots, with various alchemy-themed sculptures, prints, and fabrics. And yes, many of them are held up by severed (3D printed) hands. Until 8 Dec; free; Chetham’s Library, Long Millgate, M3

Light 'em up

Events like this one manage to make us grateful for the dark evenings. Lightwaves is back, filling Salford Quays with digital artworks and interactive light installations until next Sunday. The launch this weekend includes a performance by the Honour Choir, free light graffiti workshops, and live dance. The real fun begins after dark. 8–17 Dec; free; Salford Quays, M50

Off the radar

Proper markets turning you off? Want something different? *Obviously* the Northern Quarter had to go and host a very lovely alternative. OFF Markets will still keep things festive, transforming the Swan Building’s basement into a winter wonderland, complete with booze and food, but will also bring together independent brands from across the country for top-notch shopping. 9 Dec; 12pm–6pm; free; 20 Swan Street, M4

See through walls

Have you ever wondered how art galleries end up with their collections? And perhaps felt that something was missing? Manchester Art Gallery are hosting discussions that they describe as “thinking out loud” on the topics of black artists and modernism. The events will allow attendees to gain a bit more understanding of these cultural powerhouses’ processes. 7 Dec; 6pm–7.30pm; free; Manchester Art Gallery, Mosley Street, M2
